Risk Assessment

Iterative approach needed

Formal techniques can be used

The Test Lead Risk Register is provided to help you to identify important potential failures that could occur in the Application you are testing. Each potential failure represents a risk (to the project operation or success) of some kind. As you identify and document a risk, you assign it parameters such as "Severity", "Likelihood" and so on, and Test Lead can use the values you assign to calculate the relative importance or priority of each risk. Because risks can later be linked to test designs, you can then prioritize your tests to make sure that the most important (those with the highest risk) are run, even if your testing time or budget is not enough to cover all the tests you think should be done.

If you are not already familiar with risk assessment, the Test Lead User Guide explains a simplified approach to building a Risk Register, and also suggests some supplemental reading if you are interested in using a more formal risk assessment approach.
