TALC2000 can be used for legacy application testing on nearly
all mainframe and midrange platforms. We say "nearly all" just
in case, we haven’t found one we can’t work with yet.
TALC2000 is application host platform independent.

|
-
TALC2000’s Host Independence can dramatically reduce the cost of testing
applications on multiple platforms
-
Not only do you save on tool costs because you can use the
same tool for each application platform, you save on people
costs, training costs, consultancy costs and startup costs.
Your people only have to learn to use one tool to test
applications on all of your platforms.
"We purchased TALC2000 for testing our DIGITAL VAX
applications and now we are using TALC2000 for testing the
applications on our IBM mainframes, instead of the "......."
tool we had already purchased."
J.L., Y2K Project Manager, US Top 100 company
This customer is one of many who are realising the benefits
of purchasing one tool, teaching testers once and then testing
applications on many hosts.

Client/Server tools for host legacy application testing
-
TALC2000 is not a client/server GUI test automation tool. It
is designed specifically for character/text based legacy
application testing. These legacy applications till form the
core business systems in the majority of medium and large
corporations world wide.
For those of you thinking of using a client/server test
automation tool to test your character based legacy
applications our advice is DON’T.
TALC2000 has replaced ALL the well known client/server
testing tools at various customer sites over the past three
years for their host application testing. In every case while
the client/server tool may have been excellent for
client/server testing the nuances of host application testing
were simply not easily catered for.
Other feedback from customers who purchased TALC2000
to replace the use of client/server tools was that the necessary
complexity of testing tools for client/server meant very steep
learning curves for a tester to achieve the most simple host
testing requirements. In some cases they simply gave up and
tested manually because it was easier and quicker.

TALC2000 installation requirements
-
TALC2000 is installed on a Windows based PC an
interfaces to a PC terminal emulator accessing the host
application to capture and replay test.
The recommended minimum PC configuration for
TALC2000 is a PENTIUM 100 with 16MB of memory.
TALC2000 is supported on Windows 3.n, Windows 95, Windows NT.
TALC2000 needs to be installed on each Tester’s PC. This
can be done through a local CD-ROM drive or from a
network accessible CD-ROM drive. Either way the
installation is simple and quick.

PC terminal emulator support
-
TALC2000 is able to automate testing of applications by
emulating a manual tester interacting with a PC Windows
based terminal emulator program. A number of PC
emulators are automatically configured upon installation.
Others require manual configuration which is fully explained
in the support documentation
Commonly supported emulators include:
| TN3270 | Attachmate EXTRA!
|
| RUMBA (5250 emulation) | Reflections
|
| KEAterm | Softerm
|
| Host Explorer | Glink
|
| Hummingbird | IRMA
|
| TTWIN | PathWorks
|
| Visionware | NS Commander
|
| Talking Windows | 3270 Pro |
If you are using a PC terminal emulator not listed here there is a
strong chance that to use it requires only a simple manual
configuration. TALC2000 has been configured to run with special
banking terminals and even with typesetting keyboards used in the
printing industry.
If it is not possible to configure your terminal emulator using
the existing configuration options we have the experience to
provide support for a new terminal emulator within a few
days provided we have access to good documentation and
the terminal emulator software.
This flexibility in terminal emulator support is what makes
TALC2000 truly multi-platform capable.

Local and Network Test storage
-
It is advisable that at least 20MB local disk storage be
allocated on each tester’s PCs for TALC2000 and interim
test creation. More is required depending on the number of
tests to be stored locally on the PC.
Tests can also be stored and run from a central server or
servers on the network.
TALC2000 has a unique test storage approach that
minimises the amount of disk space for what is typically the
need to store thousands of tests for a single major business
application.
This and Test storage is unique to TALC2000 because TALC2000
saves all host application data as character and attribute
streams (instead of bitmaps)and compresses this data so that
storing the results requires little disk space. A typical
application screen image, including all attribute data, usually
requires less than 1000 bytes of storage. When you compare
this with the approach of other tools this is a huge saving.
This saving is not only for disk storage but also has a very important
impact on the associated network traffic generated when transmitting
these tests across the network. The small file sizes also translate
into extremely fast test validation because of the relatively small
volumes of data that must be processed.
